All this talk about Breck is making me ill, and I'm at sea level. The reason: I can't make next year's CCR because of work. The Republicans decided to hold their convention in NYC, so that week is frozen. Just my luck, it's the same week as CCR. I've been to Colorado and the riding is FAAANTAAAASTIC. Back in Aug 2002 I did the 100,000 ft pass ride, well, it was more like 50,000 ft pass ride because of a little mishap, okay, a big mishap, I had. Well, let me tell you from first hand experience.
EAT and DRINK often, especially drink.
I started the ride fine at 6am, now I had been riding in CO for a few days, had something to eat/drink and rode over various altitudes ranging from 5,000 to 13,000 feet. Then around 2 pm on a innocuous road, I passed out and drifted onto the soft shoulder. The bike shuttered and I snapped to it and tried to control the bike. After trying all that I could, the road curved and the bike went straight...straight into a tree about 20 ft down an embankment. I rode it all the way. The bike was a mess but I was ok, luckily. A victim of hypoglycemia.
Now, I do not travel any long distance, or extended riding time, without my Camelbak. I'm constantly drinking water and make the appropriate stops to eat. This was an expensive lesson, but well learned. The only thing that I can offer is my costly experience.
Please take heed: DRINK WATER or Gatorade or whatever will help to stay hydrated. Although I'll miss this one, I'll be going back to Colorado to do more riding and to finish the second half of the 100,000 foot ride.
Just be prepared and you will have a blast....trust me.
